Hip Replacement
About Hip Replacement
The hip joint relies on smooth cartilage and synovial fluid for pain-free movement. Over time, aging, injury, overuse, or conditions like osteoarthritis can wear down cartilage and weaken ligaments, causing pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility.
Hip replacement (hip arthroplasty) is a surgical procedure in which the damaged hip joint surfaces are replaced with artificial implants, restoring smooth movement, reducing pain, and improving function.
- Patients with severe hip arthritis not relieved by medications or physiotherapy
- Individuals with fractures or trauma to the hip joint
- Patients with limited mobility and chronic hip pain affecting daily activities
- Total hip replacement: Both the ball (femoral head) and socket (acetabulum) are replaced
- Partial hip replacement (hemiarthroplasty): Only the femoral head is replaced
- Revision hip replacement: Replacement of a previous implant that has worn out or failed
Modern hip implants typically last 15–20 years, depending on activity levels, implant type, and adherence to post-operative care.
The procedure is performed under anesthesia, so patients do not feel pain during surgery. Post-operative discomfort is usually manageable with pain medications, ice therapy, and guided physiotherapy.
- Immediate post-op: Walking with a walker or support, gentle leg movements
- 2–6 weeks: Gradual physiotherapy to regain hip mobility and strength
- 6–12 weeks: Increase in walking distance, light daily activities
- 3–6 months: Full functional recovery, return to normal activities, and low-impact sports if cleared by your surgeon
