Arthroscopy

Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that allows doctors to view, diagnose, and treat problems inside a joint using a small camera called an arthroscope. Unlike open surgery, arthroscopy uses tiny incisions, which often results in quicker recovery and less pain.

Joints like the knee, shoulder, elbow, and hip are under constant movement and stress. Over time, injuries, sports activity, or wear and tear can damage cartilage, ligaments, or menisci inside the joint. Arthroscopy helps assess and repair these structures before more severe damage occurs.

• Removal or repair of torn cartilage or ligaments
• Treatment of loose fragments inside the joint
• Smoothing rough cartilage surfaces
• Reducing pain and improving joint function
• Early intervention to prevent worsening joint damage

Patients experiencing persistent joint pain, swelling, stiffness, or limited movement that does not improve with medications or physiotherapy may be candidates. It is often recommended for sports injuries, meniscus tears, rotator cuff injuries, or early arthritis changes.

The procedure is usually performed under regional or general anaesthesia, so patients do not feel pain during surgery. Post-operative discomfort is generally mild and managed with pain medications, ice therapy, and guided physiotherapy.

Recovery depends on the joint treated and the procedure performed. Most patients can start gentle movement exercises soon after surgery, with gradual return to daily activities. Full recovery and return to sports may take a few weeks to a few months.
